Weekly report – 12/15/09

Well, its been about a month since Nor’Ida and with the wind blowing hard just about every other day, the fishing has yet to fully recover, particularly at the Outer Banks.  Water temperatures are ranging from the mid-50s north to around 60 south, so there is still some hope, but the chances of a good late fall bite decline with each day that passes.  Our best hope would be for an extended period (like a week) of warm, high pressure weather conditions, but that doesn’t appear to be in the cards anytime soon.  Additionally, its always possible that with this crummy weather, a slug of stripers and/or big blues will hit the Outer Banks, but so far, its mostly been scattered bass around Oregon Inlet.  The striper fishing around the soundside bridges has been fairly consistent as well, but not spectacular.  The most consistent surf catches have been puppy drum and Ramp 43 in Buxton is the most commonly mentioned area.  You know it is rather slow when the fish seem to be concentrated at one particular ramp.  Perhaps that reflects the lack of people fishing rather than the actual location of fish.  From Hatteras Island, in addition to pups, there are increasing reports of nice flounder (a good sign) and big sharks around the Point.  No specks to speak of from the Outer Banks, but their reports increase as you move south along the coast, although it is unclear how many are being taken from shore versus boat and there still seems to be mostly smaller fish.  I hope to have a first-hand report this coming weekend…stay tuned.
