Speaking of specks…
Its October 1st and the “official” start of the surf speckled trout season by my calendar. I’ve heard of a few decent fish scattered up north of Kitty Hawk and a fair number of smaller trout in the sloughs and holes throughout the Outer Banks.
It seems we have two main stocks of fish that prowl the bars of the Outer Banks surf through the fall and winter. The Chesapeake fish trickle their way south quite predictably – the early fish being taken up in Duck and Southern Shores, before the holes on the rest of Bodie Island start to fish well. At the same time, our resident fish stage behind the inlets feasting on the finger mullet and glass minnows existing the sounds en masse during after after each autumnal cold front. They start following the bait out and along the beach, mixing with the Chessie fish in the process.
The first really good surf bite usually happens as the water starts to clear after a hard NE blow in late September/early October. It feels like trout weather here in Pittsboro tonight. With the almost full moon tides surging, I’m wishing I was on the beach in KDH or KH tonight. Maybe I’ll tie on a nightstalker mirrolure and make a few casts into our pond, just for the heck of it…or maybe I’ll just drink another beer and reminisce…

Like your write-up on Specks.
Glad to see someone with experience writing about the beach & sound fishing at the Outer Banks.
Keep up the good work; I’m looking forward to more articles & reports
Will be at Nags Head all next week. Will get you fishing reports and an update of the NH SFT that starts Thursday.
Good luck, Bo. Good time to be there…
